Online food shopping!

  • I like Ocado but our deliveries are often late and usually with no call or warning!

Sainsburys were doing OK but I miss the colour coded bags, receipt with list of items in date order, shelf life promise, easy refunds... Tonight they were on time (early last week!) prawns with todays date on (refunded by driver) no receipt (it will be posted!), all the veggies are dated 16th which is rubbish and minced beef also dated 16th! I want to shop once a week, can't do that with Sainsburys, can with Ocado...

I have used Abel & Cole, ASDA,Ocado, Sainsbury's, Shorters Club, Tesco and Waitrose.

    Ocado
Biggest range of any supermarket (Ocado delivery told OH he didn't know they did some of the stuff we bought today). Not only Ocado own brand and Waitrose but also artisan stuff eg Gail's Bread, Daylesford and foreign food eg American, French, Swedish. Some free slots early morning/late night otherwise delivery is expensive (unless you get a Delivery Pass). Discount off first order with free delivery, freebies here and there, minimum order £40. Superb customer service and a lower than Tesco brands promise or you get vouchers. No silly subs, they call and ask if it's OK to deliver early, have only been late once since August and texted to let me know. One hour delivery slots. Polite friendly drivers will bring shopping into kitchen if you want. Ocado on the Go app is brilliant and means you can do shopping on train/bus, while having pedicure etc. Website really easy to use and if they don't stock stuff you want you can do a product request.

If you're on a budget though, Ocado may tempt you to buy too much.

    Waitrose
Free delivery at any time, minimum order £50. Discount on first order and free delivery I think. Superb customer service, polite and friendly drivers. You can specify no subs if you wish. Tesco brand price match. Sometimes it pays to order with Waitrose because even if their prices can simetimes be a bit higher on some things, free delivery saves money if the other store is charging 6.99 to deliver on a Saturday morning. If you sign up for a MyWaitrose card you will get vouchers you can use online or instore. Have never had any freebies. Hate the website, the old one was far better.

    Abel & Cole
£10 minimum order, 99p delivery, no timed slots, great customer service, have had some nice freebies. Superb food. Much of it more expensive than supermarkets but you can find the odd bargain and they do special offers. Website not difficult to use but fairly basic. Never had any subs since started ordering in August.

    The rest..

Tesco - late also early without warning, silly subs, missing items, grumpy staff. Discount off first order. Website easy to use.
ASDA same as above. I think ASDA cheaper on own brands than the big four.
Sainsbury's - not quite as bad as Tesco and ASDA but have been late. Discount off first order. Great customer services dept. Website really easy to use.
Shorters Club - polite friendly driver, not timed slots, only used once so far, useful for bulk orders of non-perishables and non-food items. Website easy to use.

Thank you very much. I did have a look at ocado and maybe i'm doing it wrong, but I did not see a lot of choice? I will go back and look as must be doing ti wrong.

I will stay away from ASDA as not a big fan of their own brand food after shopping there for mths at previous address.

We don't have a local Waitrose. I do like their food too.

  • Bear in mind that online food shopping isn't just limited to the supermarkets.
I recently purchased enough Cafedirect coffee beans to last me more than 6 months from making a saving of over £200 on the normal shop price for them.
I don't have easy access to good indian or asian supermarkets where I currently live but places like etc... offer similar ranges of products at similar prices.
Things like flour can be purchased direct from the mill.
Amazon have an extensive grocery section, while you couldn't do a full shop there they do have some good offers & regularly offer free delivery on things.

Splitting your shopping between multiple companies according to who is cheapest & bulk buying items you will always use when they come up particularly cheap often works out more economical than doing it all in one place.

Thank you very much. I did not even think of this and very glad you've posted. Going to really look into this.

  • I've only used Tesco and Sainsburys so far. Both have been great and turned up slightly early both times. Tesco has £12 off a £60 spend for new customers right now too

    Fab, thank you.

Hi baby cakes if you do go for ocado -my fave- search round on here there are introductory offers for first delivery only so make sure you get the best deal for a first shop, usually the offer is a good percentage off whole shop or 20pounds off 80 spend something like that. There is a code knocking about with a good deal if you sign up for delivery pass as well. We signed up for a delivery pass and am really pleased with the service. I find the fruit a bit on the expensive side though so nip to local market for that
  • When I first started food shopping online I used https://www.mysupermarket.com which is great as it keeps a tally of what your shopping basket would cost at all the other shops e.g. if you use it to shop Tesco it'll show you how much the same basket would cost on Ocado, Sainsburys, Asda etc.

I used Asda and other than a few late deliveries (one past midnight - I was not a happy bunny) they were pretty good. Only once did I get something the day of (or before) its sell by date, if deliveries were late they would refund me once I complained and they are by far the cheapest.

Once OH and I started shopping together he wanted to switch to Tescos and as much as I hate the company their online service is excellent and for a lot of foods they guarantee you it won't go off before a certain number of days (usually 3 or 4).
  • I have used Tesco, ASDA, Sainsburys, Waitrose and Ocado.

My favourite is Waitrose however they do not deliver to my new address so I use Ocado and I am very happy with the service I have recieved so far.

  • I have used Donald Russell for meat - only the offer stuff though. Its not the cheapest but the quality is excellent and their offers of mixed meat packs are really good. Another online meat supplier is Clare Barry - again, some real bargains if you can buy in bigger quantities and freeze stuff. A bigger outlay to begin with can pay didvidends. Worth a look anyway. Good Luck!

(Using them as we speak) You shop as usual from your shopping list and when you are finished it will tell you were the cheapest basket total is from then you are directed to fill in details and book a delivery slot. after a few shops you should start collecting vouchers

Also anything you get with asda you can use the reciept to see if they were the cheapest against all the other supermarkets. if they were more expensive you could get the difference! (10%)

    shop . asda . c o m / asda - price - guarantee
