Whatever happened to salted butter?

Has anyone noticed that, these days, some manufacturers of butter no longer state on the packet whether the product is salted or unsalted? We have recently had several instances of unmarked butter going rancid, despite the fact that it had been refrigerated and was at least a month before the 'best before' date. I have attempted to contact the makers of Country Life butter (Dairy Crest) but their customer service line seems to be perpetually unavailable. I also tried emailing them, but there are so many hoops to jump through before you can do this, that I gave up and am now in the process of writing to them.
Maybe they are afraid that people won't buy butter if it has Salted stamped on it, but we seldom buy unsalted because of its tendency to go off.

derek7 out of interest, how long did you have the butter in the fridge for ? Never had unsalted butter go rancid on me but wonder whether that's because OH has used it up way before other people would.
That's really shoddy customer service from Dairy Crest
I emailed Lactalis McLelland about President butter, wanting to know if they were going to import the organic butter available in France. I got an email from the marketing manager himself within a few days. Sadly no plans to import the organic variant yet but look out for more President butters this year so presumably there will be introductory offers0 -
Never had a problem with salted butter, had various brands and shops own brand. Just check the dairy crest website and the email address is easy to find, didnt have to jump through a hoop to get to it.0

Why didn't you just return it to where you bought it from? Your contract is with them not the manufacturer.

I'm pretty sure Country Life is colour coded too. Green stripe for salted and a red stripe for unsalted.0 -

We been buying President Butter with sea salt crystals in Waitrose for a while now - this is the one in round container butter dish style. Very nice, was on offer, I think at £1.49, but not anymore.

Well, thanks for all the replies. Must say, I am overwhelmed.
Firstly Denise, we too have never had a problem with salted butter, but the first time we attempted to return a batch of unsalted to ASDA, the manager did not even know what the word 'rancid' meant! He was very reluctant to replace it.
@Edwardia. We don't normally refrigerate butter for much more than a week, as my wife is a prolific baker, which is why she does buy some unsalted. The difficulty was that we weren't aware that it was colour-coded. Thanks for that information. Must investigate further. Oh, and as you say, the so-called customer service from Dairy Crest is pretty poor. No explanation as to why the phone was unavailable.
DFC79.Finding an email address is easy. Trying to use it is a somewhat different kettle of fish. Probably depends on which page you try to contact them on. They seem to have a variety of links. On one page, the links didn't work at all. In any case, I much prefer speaking to a person at times like this.0
