Hi my friend left his job "voluntary" and the job centre are saying he cant get his dole money. The reason he left is because he would have to travel 3hrs every day to be with his pregnant wife is there anything he can do ..

Maybe quitting his job was not the most sensible thing to do? I can't see the government being overly happy of people randomly resigning because things aren't workingout and expecting benefits.
What might have been better would have been to try and change his hours so as to work 4 long days instead of5, or aybe trasnfer to another site, asked to go part -time, job share etc etc. I believe he might also have been eligible for paternity leave when thelittle one wasborn. I know this doesn't help now but if he finds himself in a similar situation in the future (or for anyone else reading this thread).
I'm not sure but I think he may be able to claim a hardship payment (I'm not sure if this is a one-off or not or how to claim). I would assume he'dhave to go through the job centre or look online and do a benefits check to see though.

appeal?
I dont think I would have told them the real reason if it was me. I would have said my contract was up or something!? NEVER tell the job centre you have left a perfectly good job.
Travelling 3 hours is better than no job, I know its not the best, but its a hell of a lot better than putting up with all the cuts thats going to be taking place this year.0 -
No point in telling the job centre that your contract was up.
They check with your previous employer why you left nowadays.
He's being sanctioned for giving up a perfectly good job. All it needed was time and effort.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Oh and the JC would never write to your employer to check? LOLchelle_bell wrote: »appeal?

I agree, Don't lie to them and tell them your contract was up or anything like that as they get in touch witht them to find out. I also left a job because of travel. In my case, living where I do, It was impossible for me to get to my job for the time they wanted me to be there, I tried buses/trains/car sharing/advertising in local newspaper and could not find a way around it. Fortunately, they found in my favour. I had to fill in a whole form when I first went back, explaining my reasons for leaving etc and then a few weeks later was sent more questions. When you leave, you have to prove you had 'just cause' to leave, looks like they decided it wasnt a good enough reason. An appeal might be first idea, may a visit to the Citizens Advice to see what can be done.0

Never lie to the JC as it will only come back to haunt you/bite you in TA. If it were me id be focusing on getting a job just any job as the wife is pregnant.0
