Unrequested transfer

Has anyone else experienced this and what action did they take?

Basically in Nov I received a "sorry you are leaving" letter from Npower. This was news to me so I called and was told Sottish Power had requested a transfer???? I told Npower nope not me have not agreed nothing so they said they would dispute this transfer on my behalf. I rang Scottish Power and indeed a new customer (not even close to my name) wants to use them and my address has been linked possibly as there are new builds nearby? They apologised and opened a complaint on my behalf. Now I will cut a LONG story short but despite numerous phone calls my gas AND my electric have transferred temporarily to Scottish Power!! NPOWER have assured me I will return to them shortly and I will not be billed by SP. that is not the point....how can this happen? Do they not cross reference customer names? They have said this is common when there are new properties by existing roads.....thanks that helps not!

I just feel so helpless that despite my protests it still happened and it looks to me that NPower benefit as I pay them even though Sp have supplied me for 6 weeks.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    Welcome to the forum.

It is called an erroneous transfer and happens quite often. If you to a search on MSE you will find lots of posts on this subject.

The cause can be a simple error with address or meter serial number, to a doorstep knocking salesman fraudulently submitting your meter number and getting commission.

I would write to NPower now quoting your telephone conversations and stating that you will want compensation for any loss you incur. This is especially important with Npower as a discount is applied after 12 months - and you do not want this 'break' to start the qualifying period again.

You say you already have opened a complaint with nPower as soon as they sent you a 'sorry you are leaving' letter? Good :)

You also say that the switch happened 6 weeks ago?

You do know that a supplier only has 8 weeks maximum to resolve a compliant before you can take the matter to the ombudsman if you like?
It sounds like that date is almost upon us. The supplier will incur ombudsman fees if they are forced to intervene to get you the resolution you deserve.
