Council Tax Benefit "Claim Suspended"

Sorry if this is in wrong thread. Please move if it is.

Received a letter saying,
We have noted from our systems that we hold no recent proof of your earnings. As this change may result in your council tax benefit reducing, we have suspended your benefit pending a response to this letter.
They now want proof of all our earnings since 01/04/2009.

I have no problems providing the information. I am at a loss to all this? I have always supplied what ever information since council tax came in.

  • Did you supply that info back in 2009 - P60's would be best if you have them with bank statements as backup. Could they have lost your file do you think? It happens.

Yeah I have P60's to send in. We alsways seem to have trouble with this council about council tax. In April we got a letter saying we didn't have to pay a penny. My wife phoned up and said are you certain about this. Yes was reply. Then we get another letter you do need to pay etc. They are doing my head in. Just can't understand whats going on.

There would have needed to be some change in the calculation - presumably your income changed.

A council tax demand will be issued based on the particular circumstances on that day, if these change the next day then a new demand notice needs to be issued.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Each year you fill in all the details so they get the information required. All I can do is send of p60's and wait.

Do your wages vary throughout the year (overtime, bonus etc) ?

    Xmas Saver!
When ever I take anything in to our offices I ask for a receipt and the name of the person taking the copy of paper work.

Last year I took some change of income paperwork in. The girl at the desk worked out my new benefit. I asked her a couple of times if it was right, she replied 'Yes' and got quite shirty with me.
I left, went food shopping, then went back and saw someone else, who worked it out to be a completely different amount.

So personally I never believe a word most of them say. Our local CT office is supposedly closing soon, as all claims will be done on line. Will it be a nightmare ? I expect so.

    yes they do.

Have you advised then each time they do (as you are required to do so) ?

  • I have emailed my local councillor to phone me Monday.

So that would mean phoning up every month. At the end of the day the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing at the council.

Every year all details are provided.
