Full time Caring for wife and kids on JSA > need something else

Hi, I need some advice.

Background
I have been a fulltime carer for my wife (depression, multiple personality disorders, OCD, compulsion spending, Spondylolisthesis - bad back)
Did this by working on and off. Now wife is worse (mental and physical) i'm unable to work. Now on JAS since July 2012. Applied for DLA in Aug 2012, reviewed in Nov 2012 turned down in jan 2013.

Stuff
Now I am mentally preparing for an appeal now, me and my wife's condition makes applying especially tricky.

I have dyslexia and my wife cannot face putting the relevant facts down on paper. I find the paper work intense.

The Problem
I am very stressed and think the only option would be for me to go onto income support, as my wife is not well enough to care for the kids, whilst I am at work. (JSA has moved me to part time work, because they admit that i have caring responsibilities.)

Question
Is anyone in this big grey boat with wings. What benefit should I be on and how do I achieve this? Please as simply as possible.

Comments

  • You aren't entitled to JSA as you aren't available for work. You should be claiming DLA, carers, child benefit, income support and child tax credits. Is your wife getting ESA ? Try contacting the CAB.

You need help to complete the DLA form. Please don't try to do it by yourself.

Your local MIND may be able to help you with the forms

    http://www.mind.org.uk/

If not, try Your local DIAL office (if your area has one) or CAB

If your wife is awarded DLA care at mid or high rate, you will be eligble for carer's allowance, which also gives access to other benefits.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.
