My mother died 6 years ago and my father got in touch after walking out on me when I was a baby. I also a half brother from my mum (who I want to inherit my estate) and half siblings from my dad's subsequent marriage (who I don't want to inherit)
As far as I am aware the order of intestacy is
- Children (don't have any)
- Grandkids (see above)
- Parents (I don't want my dad to inherit anything!)
So I assume I need a will in order to have my wishes carried out upon my death.
Thanks for your help and replies!!
100% correct and if your dad was dead when you die then your half siblings from both side would then be next each receiving an equal share. I would make sure the will states something along the lines of should I have no issue then I ......... this then allows for the fact that should you have a child or children the will you write not wont preclude them and would save you the need to pay for a codicil to be added

If the father was dead but the mother was still alive, the mother would inherit it all.
If both parents had died, full blood siblings would inherit first. If they had died first but had children, the children would inherit their share.
If there were no full blood siblings or descendants alive, then the half blood siblings would inherit.0 -

However the OP made no mention of full blood siblings which is why I went straight to the half blood in my post

I've learned from experience on here that other people will read the post and assume the advice goes for everybody. I either say something like "In your particular case" or give the generalised information.0 -
