Can anyone give me any pointers on this one?
I have a HP Pavilion. Its just gone 1 year old.
When trying to do anything be it internet or word processing the pointer has started to move very randomly as if it is stuttering. As it does this the system momentarily slows down too.
If listening to music it will play normally then it goes funny as if its a corrupt file (sound breaks up, sounds like when Sky has poor reception) then returns to normal. Its not the music files and if replayed does the same thing but at different points of the track.
For background.
I re-formated and fresh install of win 7 about 3 months ago but this has only just started.
I have ran AVG & Spybot and found nothing and defragged using "my defrag".
Any ideas what could be causing this?

Could be various different reasons. from simple indexing to hdd failure.
is it 32 or 64bit version?
how much RAM have you got?
what browser are you using?
have you tried updating graphic card drivers?0 -
It sounds like your CPU is spiking on its usage. It is likely some background process is causing this. What you need to do is this:
1) When you first turn on the pc goto the start menu, and at the box in the bottom type in taskmgr and press enter
2) This will load windows task manager, in the tabs at the top go to processes
3) Click the "Show processes from all users" button (this is important)
4) Click the CPU column so that the highest numbers are always at the top
What this is displaying is the amount of work that your system is doing in terms of processor usage in "Percent". At the top normally should be System Idle Process - this should be high (in the 90s) this one entry indicates the amount of FREE resources you have on the system in terms of processor usage.
What you are looking for here is something else making its way to the top of this list. When you have set it up for the day, minimise it and as soon as the cursor starts jumping as you suggest go straight back into task manager and look at what is at the top and in the Image Name. Make a note of the Image Name and the number it has in the CPU column and post it in here.If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!0 -
It could be thermal throttling... where the CPU slows itself down because it's getting too hot.
Are all the fans working and free of dust? Are you doing something silly like using it on a soft surface?0 -
Thanks for the replies, i'll try to answer some of the questions.Could be various different reasons. from simple indexing to hdd failure.

I nearly always use firefox but fairly recently installed Chrome to use with me Nexus.
The graphic drivers appear to be up to date.Trinitrotoluene wrote: »It sounds like your CPU is spiking on its usage. It is likely some background process is causing this.
The occasional spike to mid 20% from firefox (with a few tabs open) and raport (for online banking) peeks at 20 or 30% occasionally. It could be thermal throttling... where the CPU slows itself down because it's getting too hot.

All free from dust and seem to be running smooth and quiet (i like to keep it nice and clean).
Its nearly always on a flat surface. Even when its on my knee its on a little desk thing. If it is directly on my knee for a short session i position it so as not to obstruct the air intake and keep an eye on temp (the air exit is at the side near keyboard. Easy to let my hand drop occasionally to check exit temp).
I'll keep an eye on task manager to see if anything else spikes.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.0 -
