Why have TURKEY Holidays become SO expensive over the past few years!!!

Hi,

I've been going to Turkey for holidays for many many years. I love it.

Back in mid 2000 it use to be for 2.4 of us :) and more recently its been 2.5 (For those that didn't watch 2.4 kids....I mean 2 adults & 2 kids and now it's 3 kids).

Anyway, in the past I've always managed to find self catering holidays for about £250 each a total of about £1'250.00 for a 2 week break in Marmris.

Why is it that this year I can't find anything below £2'200?
:jTo be Young AGAIN!!!!...what a wonderfull thought!!!!!

  • Hi, its a good question. In the 2000's things were different. Unfortunately now, you will be lucky to find a flight to Turkey in peak season at £250. To that you need accomodation to suit 5 people for two weeks (accomodation for 4+ tends to be more expensive) You dont mention when you are looking at going but I presume its when the children are off school, so you have to take this into account too. Before, they had 1000's of flight seats to Turkey a week to get rid of and ended up selling them for nothing, now they just dont bother running those flights as it probably doesnt make business sense. Since the crisis, many companies have had to restructure and rethink the way they were working. Before more was more, now less is more.
This is my view. Maybe you could look at going somewhere else? If you need any advice, just shout.
    Happy :)
  • Look at flights when they're first released for some bargains! Accommodation is still very cheap.
I booked Easyjet flights to Bodrum for the end of June 7 nights & they were £170pp return inc baggage. Apartments are from £70 for 2 for something basic with decent reviews.

One of the reasons was Turkey became a market that was over saturated. You had a number of smaller tour operators offering cheap deals there and the bigger operators lowered prices to compete.

Trouble is there were too many seats to turkey, and prices ended up being so low that there was either no profit, or even a loss. Goldtrail was one of the big turkey operators that went under for that reason, and Holidays4u went the same way a year later.

Those two represented a huge amount of seats to turkey being wiped from the market; therefore prices adjusted accordingly.

This is a very good explanation of the situation.

Most of the cheap travel companies went bust. Kiss, Goldtrail, Excel, Holidays4U.

Is it anything to do with 13 years of inflation

Supply and demand. More people wanting to go to Turkey as it is seen as a good value destination outside of the Eurozone but there are fewer package holiday companies operating. Turkey is also a country where the package operators dominate as relatively few people go there on DIY trips.

Now might be a good time to investigate DIY options by booking flights, transfers and accommodation separately.

This, in addition to fuel prices and taxes increasing.
