I just got back my renewed "new style" photo licence and I was trying to understand my provisional entitlement on the counterpart.

I've got category A (motorcycle) provisional entitlement, can anyone tell me exactly what that allows me to do under the new rules from 19 January 2013? The enclosed guidance sheet isn't exactly clear

BTW, I am over 24 and hold a full driving licence.

Depends when you passed your driving test. But you probably just need a CBT to ride upto a 125cc with L plates.

Passed in '95 if that makes any difference.

You can do your CBT and then ride a 125 with L plates displayed. If you are looking to take your test as you are over 24 I would go the direct access route.

The old option of taking your test on a 125, being limited to 33bhp for two years and then being able to ride anything you like is gone from the 19th. if you take your test on a 125 after 19th January you will only have a full licence to ride up to 125 and you will need to take another set of module 1 and 2 practical tests to be able to get on anything bigger than a 125.

By going for direct access you will only take the test once (assuming you pass first time of course).

You can ride a moped on your current car licence without having to complete CBT.

Thanks mate, much clearer. I wasn't too sure about still having to take the CBT or not to ride up to a 125cc. I see the 2 year limit has gone also.

Ahh 2 year limit where it falls off your licence.. No need for that anymore. CBT expires after 2 years anyway.

So you will need a CBT every 2 years. Last time i heard it had gone up from £60 to £130 when a mate took his CBT recently.
