Windows 98se - sharing irq's

Does anybody have a simple guide as to how to amend irq's in W98?
I do not have any actual "conflicts", but the number of items sharing irq's is causing problems. I recently installed a network card and this is causing problems with the modem?!
I have tried searching on google, but most of the sites are extremely technical...is there an idiot's guide anywhere?
