Best way to pay Euros from Italian Account to £s

I am British but currently live in Italy and am paid in Euros into an Italian bank account which I use for day-to-day expenses, rent etc.
However, I will not be here long-term so have some savings in the account I would like to eventually convert to £s in my UK account.
What is the best way to do this without loosing out, or by loosing the least amount of money?
Recently, I transferred 500e from my Italian account to my UK Barclays current account as an experiment, it worked out like this:
500 Euros = £393.33, and the rate Barclays gave me was 1.27120, however, at the moment of transfer on XE.com the rate was 1.23301 so I lost £12.18 on the transfer from the rate set by the bank.
(Note I also have the chance to get paid in US dollars into either a UK account, or my Italian one....)
