Hi, I've set a friends iPad for IMAP email (he has a number of devices).
When he deletes an email from the ipad it is deleted from the server. Grrr. That's NOT why I chose IMAP.
In the advanced tab - Deleted Mailbox - there is a one client (ipad) setting "Trash" and no Server settings are ticked. I selected the ipad Trash setting in the hope that it wouldn't toush the server. Still deletes it from the server. Grr. How do I do this? cheers

IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) is effectively a window to see/read/write the mail on the server. When you delete mail you are deleting it on the server, not on the device. Same applies if you move mail messages to a folder on one device, the change is reflected on other devices the next time they sync. How do I add a signature?0

What are you trying to achieve?
My understanding of IMAP is that keeping everything in sync is exactly what it is supposed to do. Put something in trash on the iPad and it will go into trash on the server. Delete something on the iPad and it will be deleted on the server. Read something on the iPad and it will show as read on the server.
Its design is such that all devices accessing the account stay in sync
If you want to be able to read, delete, sub folder items etc without it impacting whats on the server then use POP3 but then if you look at the same mailbox on another device it will still show in the inbox and unread0 -

At the device level (iPAD is our example), if I delete an email I don't want it deleted from the server (so that other clients can see the email).
I had assumed I'd be able to set the ipad up so that if its deleted its deleted locally only rather than on the server too but, perhaps, it appears I'm abusing IMAP!If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
Under the Mailbox Behaviours heading there is also another heading called Deleted Messages - It's Remove option should be set to NEVER.
