Is it worth adding Accidental Damage to an Insurance Policy?

I'm an insurance Newbie 1st time ive ever taken any out apart from individual items. i bought a basic insurance policy for theft/flooding/fire as im concerned about if we haf a disastor how i would replace everything :-\ After a disscussion with a friend i added a basic accidential cover it covers moolst circumsrances of accident but only Tv. Home computer, Stereo, etc. It is only costing about £4 a month extra but excess is £100!!

Is it actually worth having or if I made a claim would it put my insurance up too much to be worth the while as the items i have included would cost around the £ 300- £500 to replace new but they actually try to repair the items first Very Grateful for any advice :-) <3 Thankyou:beer:

  • Insurance generally is there for big events, so as you say flooding that destroys everything on the ground floor.

Accidental damage can be worth while, particularly for buildings, where you do something stupid and knock down a wall or burst a pipe etc but it is more questionable on contents unless you have high value items or are "likely" to knock over your TV onto your stereo and computer and destroy all 3 etc
  • If you have lovely carpets or expensive furniture and ornaments, you would consider the further accidental damage, because replacing expensive carpet for an entire room could cost a lot of money.

Some providers may also offer a £50 excess for additional accidental damage, it's worth some shopping around.

  • Thankyou <3 It is only contents as im in council. Do you know how much averagely it would put my insurance up if i had to put a claim in for accidentdal damage? If i had to put a claim of this nature then couldnt see it being for more than value of £1000 and no less than £300 any idea of impact on premiums? :-)

Just trying to work out if its actually worth paying the extra for Accidental damage as if impact on premimums long term wasnt worth it extra money may aswell be saved to pay for any Accidental damage myself as excess would be £100 anyway

For home contents, the majority of claims fall under accidental damage. For buildings the cost difference is usually so small that it is common sense to have it.

It really depends on the value of your contents and how accident prone you or your family and friends are.

Do some dummy quotes online (use a dummy name, slightly different date of birth etc) with and without a claim and see the difference. Claims tend to have to be declared for 3-5 years but their impact goes down as they become more distant.
