:mad::mad::mad:Can anyone help here please?:T:T:T

This is for a Sony Vaio laptop runnung Win 7 home premium.
No connectivity to ethernet (cables and hub etc fine on main PC). A boot window reports a service failed to start (but not sure which and cannot see any services with a 'failed' status), LAN connection is enabled, drivers reinstalled but diagnostics still say there is a driver problem for the marvell yukon 88E8057 pci-e ethernet adaptor.

Where to go from here ???? Please note I'm not very familiar with the event logs for win 7 !!

Just noticed Netgear WNA3100 Smart Wizard (??) programme on desktop icon double click reports the failed to run service message.........
Could this just be a hardware fault or the Marvell interface is being inhibited somehow?
Recently had AVG 2013 installed and removal of that at least allowed the laptop to recognise when an ethernet cable was inserted!! (boots with local Area Conn disabled; enable it manually, status is then 'no cable connected', plug in and status becomes 'enabled' but with IPv4 and IPv6 Connectivity 'not connected' and diagnostic 'might be a problem with driver'

All that does not help me too much and I do not know where to go from here so suggestions would be most welcome!

TIA

Netgear WNA3100 is a N300 Wireless USB Adapter - do you have such a thing?
How do I add a signature?

If the aforementioned Marvell driver doesn't help, you go here.

Have you tried running in Safe Mode?
Do you have an option to go back to working model via System restore?

Thanks guys, I just knew I would get help on this site :-)
Fig: Not sure if there is one (not my PC but will ask)
Tx: I had been there for the driver updates but had not noticed the diagnostics will give those a try.
Tangle: query outstanding with Sony. Awaiting response.
Blackie: had to run in Safe mode already to go back to 'last known good' as it had Blue screen of death previously after AVG install. Is not system restore drastic that will lose data and programs?

Thanks all for help to date. Will report back..........

System Restore does not affect data, although it will affect programs installed/removed since the chosen restore point was created

what is the full model number of the laptop?

System Restore is reversible. If the chosen restore point doesn't solve your issue or removes something you needed, you can run SR again and undo the last restore.

Latest 'Ethernet Driver' (Ethernet_Driver_Marvell_11.10_TF2_11.10.6.3.zip) is dated 29/09/2009.

And it has to be installed manually.

    Backtracking a bit......

At a guess the service that fails to start is connected to the Netgear USB dongle.

As for the ethernet adapter, look in Device Manager > Network Adapters. Is the marvell yukon 88E8057 pci-e ethernet adaptor present? If so, does the icon for the device show a red X or yellow triangle with !
