talkmobile/vodafone mobiles

Hi all,

Possibly one for the 'Mobile' section of the forum, but thought I'd ask here first. Has anyone tried to get a contract/PAYG with talkmobile or vodafone during their iva?

My current t-mobile contract is coming to an end/upgrade time however I've been told that I'll likely have to convert to an EE contract and lose out on the hefty discount I receive. Considering we don't get any signal since we moved I'm thinking of changing provider provided I can get a better deal, contract or PAYG.

Talkmobile use the vodafone network and seem to be the best deal for our needs and is over £10 per month cheaper than we're currently paying. But I'm unsure about the initial credit check. I emailed asking, one adviser rang to say it'd be a no, whilst another emailed to say yes so I'm confused.

Naturally I'll ask my IP's advice too before doing anything and feedback their comments.

Thanks

  • Hi, my husband is in an iva to which I am attached and we both have vodafone contracts which were set up during iva, I just applied online through their website and got accepted within about 10 minutes, no problems at all. :j
  • Hi FiatFan,

I have heard of IVA customers being unable to get a 'new' mobile phone contract. 'T-Mobile' are apparently IVA-friendly (I think they are now part of 'EE'?).

Alternatively, the safe option is to renew with your existing provider, as they tend not to do fresh credit checks at renewal time.

Sounds like the above advice is one and the same for you.

Unless you want to go PAYG, I would stick where you are.

Do let us know how you get on if you attempt to swap provider.

    Good luck.
  • thanks for the replies, will keep researching if theirs a saving to be made i'd rather have it

You could get someone who has a good credit rating to take it out in their name. They could limit the contract so it never exceeds the limit and then you pay them the monthly contract cost.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

They don't do credit checks for payg so you will have no problems there.
  • Having researched and calculated the many options, I finally decided to take the plunge with the Vodafone deal. I've separately ordered new contracts for me an the wife, so far the £1 credit checks have been taken, hopefully it'll return tomorrow with confirmation of delivery.

!!!!!!, rejected lol not too surprise really but was worth a shot.

Had tried going through Phones4U as they have a good topcashback deal on at the minute. Will just have to opt for one of the PAYG deals I'd considered.

Edit: Received a phone call from P4U, seems it was turned down as my bank details didn't match, not credit score. Have now corrected bank details so will try again :)

  • HI Fiatfan- looks like you are sorted, I am with T Mobile and nearly left last year when my contract came up for renewal, found an exceptional deal with Tesco, but T Mobile matched it, halving my monthly payments, for the same calls and text deal. I am not sure the mobile providers do a credit check- if you don't pay they will cut your phone off, it's that simple really! So I never jumped ship, but I've heard the "credit" check that's done is verification of your address nothing more- lots of less than savoury characters have mobiles registered at incorrect addresses so they can carry on their drug dealing beneath a layer of secrecy (!!).

ooh no it's still dragging on! On Saturday when the bank found the problem I was advised the address details would be amended overnight and could try again Sunday.

I rang the bank lunch time on Sunday and was reassured the address details had updated and were fine to try again. We went into the P4U shop in town and tried again, rejected again for the same reason  As we were passing the Voda shop on way home we called in to ask, turns out our address is not accepted by the computer system and will have to be manually setup by the head office :( but this also by-passes all credit checks :T (so were lead to believe). I also rang the bank and the next advisor said it took 3-4 working days to update so won't be till near end of week before it's sorted.

Given the hassle so far, I'm more convinced that PAYG might just be a whole lot easier than trying to get another contract, back to weighing up our options for now.
