One thing that I didn't say in my original post was that I would also prefer to just buy edison screw bulbs, because there seems to be a better choice (for example I went to IKEA today and they didn't seem to have a single bayonet bulb).
I'm not really concerned about the fact that the adapter will protrude further, but I did wonder whether there were any safety concerns about such adapters. When I looked on Amazon I couldn't see any mention of a standard that such converters have to adhere to, which might have put my mind at ease a bit.
It seems a fairly simple piece of kit to me, but then I'm no electrician.
This is because IKEA are a Swedish company. Light bulbs on the continent are Edison, not BC.
As already mentioned, if you go to another retailer you will find plenty of BC lamps.0 -

I've bought lamps and light fittings in France and they are standard bayonet fit. Maybe France is an exception.0 -
When I first started wiring houses in the 1960's it was unheard of to have anything other than BC holders. But in those days the UK made all it's own fittings and lamps. Nowadays there are as many ES fittings as BC fittings due to most of our fittings being imported.
Why you should think that you need a huge supply of spare bulbs escapes me One or two of each type is quite sufficient, they are hardly blowing every day and replacements of any type of bulb are easily obtained.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
