As per closed's thread - which I am following now.

Finally, my new (not brand new, this was passed to me by someone else with only personal files deleted and not programs etc) is connected to the internet.

However, it is slooooooooooow. About 3 minutes from switching it on until I reach the windows log in screen and another 2 minutes from clicking my user name to getting into windows. It then takes about 4-5 minutes to shut down when finished.

It is Windows VISTA SP2 2.33gghz processor and 2GB ram. I think I need to update the RAM as going from 1 application to another is slow and they are slow to load up, but will this help startup/shutdown?

for Vista onwards, I recommend a backup and factory restore, it's the fastest cure.

All the changes made have sped up my machine significantly. Much more like it now.
