I am just horrified that these bulbs cost so much and there is now no alternative. The "car headlight" (quartz?) bulbs cost even more and do not appear to be particularly "energy saving" so I cannot see the point of these

My conspiracy theory is that incandescent bulbs had got so cheap that the manufacturers wanted to make more money so they had them banned, brought out the alleged "Long Life Energy Saving" versions at a knock down rate and have now been gradually rachetting up the price.

I still have a few 120W incandescent bulbs that I use to light one room of the house where I want immediate brightness. I bought a pile of these a few years ago from a "cheapy" shop and these have lasted longer than some of the alleged long life ones. And they immediately light a room, no stumbling around in twilight...

I DO WISH that I had bought more now. Oh dear.

I switched back to the old bulbs last year. Fed up of paying a fortune for bulbs which did not last. You can buy them on the internet.
  • Wondering if there are good bargains anywhere for these energy saving bulbs? I was a bit crazy about them and kept stockpiling them a fair number of years ago but I finally managed to rein myself in and stopped buying them. I am now nearly running out of them. Do you know where I can get them for good prices?

Surely they should last more than a few years>?:p

The "Value" bulbs were £2.89 each and claimed to last 5 years, the others were £3.50 and claimed to last 10 years. I could have bought about 40 incandescent bulbs for that price.

Under 9p for an incandescent bulb! Where?

The claims are for average life, some will last longer, some won't!!

Energy saving lights can cause health problems...

"A set of receptors in our eyes responds to blue light by suppressing production of sleep-inducing melatonin, so the naturally blue-rich light of daytime keeps us alert, while reddish evening light lets us ease into sleep. Fluorescent bulbs contain a lot of blue light, so being exposed to them late in the day or at night can contribute to sleep problems."

Tesco! Several years ago now, just before they began to phase them out.

They were packs of 10/12 bulbs.

All gone now, just "Long Life Energy Saving" ones at £3.50 each.

I will go take a look in paaaaannnndland... Thanks dacouch

  • Put long life bulbs in all lights and in about 6 years only one has gone, so maybe I've been lucky or the early ones were better made.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
