Redundancy payout

I put this on the redundancy thread but no one has answered yet so I wondered if anyone on this section may be able to help.
Hubby may be being made redundant in April,he may be getting 5k payout.
Does this affect benefits like housing benefit and council tax benefit?
I thought you could have 6k before it is taken in to account?
