Getting a card when I'm a housewife?

Circumstances have forced me to become the Primary driver on our upcoming trip to Orlando, and in order to rent the car I'll need a credit card to put the security deposit on.

I'm a stay-at-home mum with no current income of my own. I have a good credit rating but no open credit cards at present. I'm in credit on all the rest of my bank accounts though.

Annual household income is just under £50k - Can anyone recommend a credit card company that might give me a credit card based on my circumstances? I don't want to go applying for too many as I've read that that would affect my credit rating.

Thank you x

  • I am making a lot of presumptions here so sorry if i am wrong.

Would it be easier if you were to become the secondary cardholder on your partners card if they have one?

I am also a SAHM but I have obtained two credit cards this year and 0% finance on a new bed in my name. On all three applications I was clear that I did not work but I was able to obtain credit based on joint household income.

The other option is to be an additional cardholder on an account in your partner's name.

ETA: My new cards are with BHS and Halifax Clarity which is one of the best cards for using overseas as there are no fees for foreign purchases or ATM withdrawals (just interest on cash advances).

An additional cardholder is the simplest and the quickest option.
  • Wouldn't it be nice if LizziD were to come back and respond to the people who have taken the trouble to post replies?

Do these cards ask for "household income" on their applications? I thought only Amex does this.
  • If she's never had credit, maybe worth asking her own bank?

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

The BHS card I applied for instore and asked if I could include my husband's income as household income. The Halifax Clarity I applied for online and again I was able to state household income.
