Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, as it's not techie in the sense of computers, but it's techie about a TV. I've been looking at Sony TV's, I'm not bothered about 3D, and so the TV I've been looking at is a little less expensive than it's 3D version. The only other major difference that I can see is that it has a "frame rate" (don't know what that means) of 50Hz instead of 200Hz on the 3D version. As I'm not bothered about 3D, does the difference in frame rate mean the screen quality would be noticeably poorer? I know I could ask this question in a shop, but (sorry for the scepticism) they might just want to sell the more expensive TV.

Also, if I were to go for the higher specification TV, but didn't want to watch broadcasts in 3D (don't want to faff about with the 3D glasses), would I still be able to (sorry if this is a really dumb question).

  • It's not actually a frame rate as such but processing of the rate pixels change to reduce motion blurring and frame judder - mostly noticeable in sports on LCD/LED.

The source framerate of movies and blu-ray is 24 frames per second and broadcast material 25 or 50 fps. You cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear, i.e 200, 400 or 600 Hz processing will never make it better than the source although it may make it appear less worse.

Look at the pictures of the TVs you are interested in with a variety of sources, SD TV, HD TV, DVD and Bluray then choose.

If you go for the higher spec 3D TV you can watch it the whole time in 2D. In fact there is very little broadcast TV in 3D. Sky only has one channel.

Go to the store and look at the TVs. Try to view them both with vertical objects (lamp posts, building corners etc) that move rapidly across the screen and also a high speed scene, such as a speedboat going down a river, and observe the background as it whizzes by.

The one that has the least "ghost images" on the vertical object pan and the most detail on the background is the better of the two.

Yep, as above, there are more important things than 'frame rate' and manufacturers got a bit silly with it. 200Hz? Surely you need 600Hz for an even smoother image?!!
Considering that Blu Ray is 24 frames per second, and HD TV is sortof 50, interlaced, a 200Hz TV will be showing 3 made-up images for each real one it receives.
If you can see both TVs, judge them on the picture they give, and the sound they give, or other specs that you know are important to you (number of HDMI ports for example).

HD TV's usually only run at 1 of 4 speeds (Hz) 50Hz/60Hz for 2D & 100Hz/120Hz for 3D (double the rate for double the images needed)

Where you see things like 200Hz or 600Hz means that the TV takes in the 50Hz or 60Hz input then does a bit of jiggery-pokery and a lot of mathematics to do with overlapping of frames so that to don't get a steady "Frame 1" then "Frame 2" then "Frame 3"

    Its more like
    "Frame 1" then
"Frame 1 with some of Frame 2" then
    "Frame 2" then
"Frame 2 with a bit of Frame 3"
So motion looks to be smoother...
