I wouldn't, but then again, many things pet owners do baffle me (like the everyday occurence of leaving pet cats to fend for themselves amongst traffic, predators and other dangers and this being considered the social norm)

I guess this proves that this is all about an opinion, after all, none of us can actually know what an animal really wants.
To deprive a cat of the opportunity to independently roam a wide ranging area would be cruel in my view.
Cats are fully adapted and evolved to this sort of activity, therefore to treat them as a caged creature, even if that "cage" is the size of a garden, or to tie them up, even if that is to a leash, would be cruel, in my view.

Ergo - this poster is - in my view - cruel to their cat (assuming they have one).

The point - the needs of an animal vary enormously depending on the type / breed and their life experience / development.

    Consider:-
    A German Shepherd police dog
    A Border Collie Sheepdog
    A domesticated Labrador
    A domesticated Miniature Yorkshire Terrier
    A domesticated Basset Hound

Massively different range of needs just based on the breed, which could be pushed even further by the animal's experience of life.

Who has the dog owner got to pop in?

If she has hired a stranger who is in the animal care business, be warned ... A friend of mine hired a lady who offered cat visits. She wanted the lady to come everyday for a fortnight, and to put out fresh food and water .. Her husband wasn't totally happy with the situation and put a camera in the kitchen .. When they returned home, what they witnessed on the recording was this lady turning up every third day, finding large containers in the kitchen cupboards and filling them up with dried food and water, and for the short duration she was there, totally ignored their cat who was acting though he really wanted some attention.
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

I wouldnt bother reporting this to RSPCA - they wont be interested.
What caught my eye in this post is that the dog has access to outside! which made me think 'Then burglers have access to inside'!
I would be asking friends if the excess on thier house contents policy is less than kennels!
may make them change thier minds!

Absolutely disgusting. People who are that selfish shouldn't own a dog. End of.

The responses here will be quite biased though.

What would the RSPCA actually say? If it's only for a week and the dog is checked on every day then I really doubt the RSPCA would do anything.

The RSPCA guidance says a dog shouldn't be left alone for more than 4 hours...for the majority of people with a full time job that woud mean breaching the Animal Welfare Act every day.

"The responses here will be quite biased though."

Doesn't change the fact it's wrong though.
  • absolutely not, it's a horrid thing to do, regardless of how 'laid back' the dog is, leaving them overnight like that is just cruel. However i will not echo the calls of "RSPCA reporting"
the RSPCA are not reliable as a company, they spend all their time prosecuting owners, and destroying animals. Honestly.

Report them to a local yet well established rescue, possibly dog specific. Who will have a very stern chat with them, and then evaluate if any other action needs taking.

the RSPCA won't care a peanut anyway, as far as they're concerned the dog's needs are being met (yeah exactly, they're effing terrible)

My akita girly is home alone for nine hours of the day, and will happily go to 12 if needs be (I'd like to say this doesn't happen often at all and I try to avoid it where I can). She does spend quite a lot of time in kennels now though due to my situation (went through a relationship split and so have gone from 2 people to care for her to just me - I'd never have let her go though, house hunting for a new rental when I relocated etc was all subject to the LL accepting her etc), but I would never ever consider leaving her home alone for longer than I absolutely have to let alone a week!! She loves the team at the kennels and gets all bouncy when they come to get her, it's a bit like a second family for her and at least then I know she's in the best hands.....

Dogs dont always dislike kennels! my Springer Meg absolutely loved going to kennels! as soon as we turned up the lane she would get really excited, bound out of the car and behave as if she owned the place! she got to know the word 'holiday' and thought it meant kennels - she wasnt so happy if we took her down the caravan!
They were very good, and as they bred springers (Welsh not English like my Meg) understood her very well!
Meg would have been devastated to have been left at home - even if people called in to feed her - she loved company!

Personally I'd say it depends on how literal everything is. 'Calling in for half an hour' doesn't just mean 30 minutes, it can also mean that they've arranged for somebody to go round every day to make sure it's ok, fed, watered and walked.
I had a similar arrangement a few years ago. When i went on holiday , my mate who lived 15 yards away would take care of the dog. If people asked if I'd put the dog in kennels i'd tell them that he's staying at home but one of my mates is keeping an eye on him.. but Ste would let him out in the morning before work and change his water, let him out when he got home from work, take him for a walk and also take him across to his for the evening... So it all just depends on how literal he means it.

Plus, if somebody asked 'you' to do the same thing; would you just go round for 30 minutes a day and that's it? or spend more time there, walking it and playing with it
