Cheapest Steam Generator Iron?

Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy one of those "steam generator" irons?
I am not sure if that is the correct name for these things, but I have put a link to a Robert Dyas one above. If the link doesnt work, it is basically one of those irons linked to a reservoir style base that makes ironing a lot easier!

The one you have shown is quite a good price, I think I paid about £150 last year for mine, I couldn't be without it now though0

I don't think buying the cheapest with these is the best buy, I bought an Asda own make and it was awful. Instead I bought a decent Tefal iron which while not a big steam generator was the best iron I have ever used. So I would recommend Tefal.0

I bought the one that was on special offer at Aldi last year for about £40 (if you do a search you will probs find the thread) and I can honestly say it was one of the best things I have ever bought. It makes ironing so much easier (be warned though you do need a special mesh ironing board as well otherwise the steam pools on the ironing board). When I first saw the steam generator irons in places like Comet I remember thinking that they were so ugly and bulky - and expensive - that I would never buy one, but, honestly, I wouldn't be without mine. Have a look on Amazon and see if there are any reviewed on there, that will give you an idea of what is a good buy.

As said before cheapest isnt always best,in the end you get what you pay for...what you want is the most bars of steam for the cheapest amount ....robert dyas and comet or currys usually have some good deals on,probably spending around £70-£100 will get you a decent steam generator...and in my opinion every household should have one they are amazinng and i wouldnt be without mine they save sooo much time ....Good luck in your hunt .Will this hammy hunt ever end ???
So far all 4 hamsters £40,3 beds £15,Skate board and u turn £22,House £25 total £97.00 ....still wanting wheel,car,slide,ball,surf board ....

There are two type of steam generator to complicate matters....
1. Ones with a removable tank, usually warm up in a couple of minutes. These have a (often noisy) pump that periodically squirts a little water from the tank into a tiny boiler to keep the steam going.
2. Simple boiler tank ones where you fill the base up, usually takes upto 10 minutes to warm up.
Cheap type 1 are often TERRIBLE as they don't have the power to instantly heat the water as it gets pumped in - they alternate between clouds of steam and boiling water spurting out the iron.
Good type 1's are OK but there is a lot more to go wrong (pump, valve, sensor)
Personally I prefer a decent type 2 like a Phillips. OK it takes a while but once up to heat it provides a high, consistant flow of 'dry' steam for up to an hour and apart from a simple boiler the only moving part is the electric steam valve. (same as type 1 has also)
Just my take on the choices.European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -
