Clearing pavements yourself
Some things you can do to help include:- Start early - It is much easier to remove fresh snow compared to compacted ice that has been compressed by people walking on it
- Do not use hot water - This will melt the snow, but may replace it with black ice
- Be a good neighbour - Some people may be unable to clear snow and ice themselves
- Make sure shoveled snow does not block people's paths, or block drainage channels
- Make a pathway down the middle of the area to be cleared first, then you can shovel the snow from the centre to the sides
- Table salt or dishwasher salt works
- Avoid spreading on plants or grass as they may be damaged by it
- A few grams (a tablespoon) for each square metre you clear should work
- The salt found in salting bins will be needed for keeping roads clear
- Steps and steep gradients might need to additional salt
- Remove the top layer of snow to allow the sun to melt ice beneath (you will need to cover any ice with salt to stop it refreezing overnight)
- A little sand or ash is a reasonable salt substitute. It will not have the same de-icing properties as salt but should offer grip under foot.
People using areas affected by snow and ice also have responsibility to be careful themselves.

I am going to phone CS and email them too to show them how disappointed I am. I am a regular shopper and spend a lot of money at this particular store, and by a lot, I mean sometimes £150 a month (when they have a glitch on!). I came out of the bloody sale with one or two little bits and bats which are going to be returned tomorrow as I only got them to stop myself feeling so angry! Don't get me wrong, I get that it's first come first served, but to clear out the whole S and G range and fill it in one trolley is just so so so wrong!
There were customers in the store with massive trolleys filled with all kinds of gifts which had been totally cleared on the shelves clearly and loudly saying "Well I will see you again next year, won't be coming to do any shopping here again until the next sale" whilst others were loudly saying "This will sell nicely at the car boot" with SA's smiling, agreeing and chipping in. There was no sign of anyone pointing out that there were only 6 of any items being allowed, it was more a case of "I've got 20 of those and 40 of those" at the till whilst the awful manager was putting things through.
I am now officially boycotting the local store which I hope will get closed down soon. It's been in the papers that they are on the brink of closure as they are not making enough money. Well my £50 to £150 a month will no longer be going to that store, and the sooner they shut down, the better! I probably sound like a complete cow, but the SA's were awful. I went over to one and told her this was not on and she more or less said tough !!!!! to me!
Anyway, I am calm and shall now drink some peppermint tea to calm my nerves or something like that.
PS. Ain't it freezing!!!
By God girl I didn't know you had it in ya.:Dnever stop doing your best because someone doesn't give you credit0 -
Have just been to put a few titbits and a drink out for the many birds that frequent my garden.
I was sitting in my dining room having a catchup and to my suprise I looked out of the window to see my favourite blackbird trying desperatly to eat the fake red berries on my standard holly bush I got whoopsied in T's;)I must admit when Lala and I bought them I thought the berries were real so in away it did some good as it made me aware that our little feathered friends also suffer when the weather is bad.
I look out for whoopsies apples and put them out. Cut in half and put on the lawn cut side up. The birds especially blackbirds love them.0 -

Mimi thats pants and I'd complain too:(Me and Nannylala bought lots of stuff (But not multiples of stuff) but it was all really nice and good natured and their were only about 5 of us in our store. But I know one year we'll go and it'll all change and they'll be people clearing the shelves:(Thats why I steer clear of Westfields which isnt far because although they always have stacks of stock I have a feeling its chaotic:eek:Beware!!!! Glitching is addictive:rotfl:0 -
