'Back room' rental gone wrong

Hi there,
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but basically I was going to rent a room at the back of a shop as a place for me to work - they had permission to sub-let it. I put down £200 as a deposit, and the first month's payment of £200 to secure it, without signing any contract.
I know I'm an idiot for doing this in the first place.
After giving them this money we had the devastating news that my husband's job is at risk, so I informed them and said that I wouldn't be able to commit to the rental after all. Now they won't give me my money back.
Does anyone know if I would have a claim? I have the receipts for the money I paid.

That's not really their problem is it, why do you expect them to tear up the contract you signed, incidentally, this is not an AST, it comes under commercial law so the contract itself will contain the conditions, they will not include a provision for you to change your mind and get your money back.
You did not sign a contract? you did at least have a verbal agreement or you would not have paid anything, put it down to experience.0
