Why four years to qualify in mental health nursing - it's usually three.

Mental health nurses in prisons usually require additional qualifications related to custodial care, especially if the OP wants to specialise in forensic mental health

However I think the OP is being optimistic time wise. Most prisons require at least 3yrs post grad experience for entry level positions. It's not the sort of role you can go into without many years of experience (hardening) to the type of people you will encounter

Still only 3 years for mental health nursing degree. 4 years will get you a dual field qualification (adult/mental health) but only certain uni's do that.
  • I'm purely going off what my course advisor told me regarding course times. If it's 3 then that is brilliant!!
With regards to working in prisons, if when it comes to it I will have to study longer to be able to achieve it, then so be it...I've wanted to do this for years.
When I did a 'job search' for similar roles, the majority of the jobs that came up did not require anything more than the mental health nursing qualification, but maybe only the minimum requirements were stated or it was for units for minor criminals? I'm not sure. I'm prepared to do whatever it takes.
Thanks for all the input :)
  • It will be Manchester Uni if that affects the timescale/course?
Just can't wait to get started :)
  • Having looked at the courses online, a number of you know more than my course advisor! Yes, 3 years Mental Health Nursing, 3 years post-grad Forensic Mental Health and a number of other interesting looking post-grad courses.
7 years, with the access course...I'll be 36 when I qualify for what I want to achieve, but life experience and just 'growing up' in that time will help me be the best I can be.
I'm very excited to get started!! :)
