Post office insurance debacle

I received my home renewal insurance(with the post office) through the post today.Basically the post office do the 'automatic renew' if you don't inform them.So i call them up to tell them that i do not wish to automatically renew my home insurance with them as i like to shop around for the best quote.Whilst on the phone the post office employee asks me a few questions to see if my circumstances have changed. As it happens i was recently made redundant to which i'm told that my current policy with the post office is now no longer valid and is cancelled with immediate effect.Though they could carry on insuring me next year for the same price as the renewal quote that i had received from them.I declined their offer.
I ended up taking out a home insurance scheme with churchill for almost half the price of the post office. The agent i spoke to at churchill was very surprised that the post office had cancelled my insurance for being made redundant.(Had to call churchill due to in their terms - have you had insurance cancelled or void) Just wanted to warn others of this if you're thinking of taking out an insurance scheme with the post office and welcome other people's views.

The post office use a panel of insurers and are therefore an intermediary.
It must be your insurer that wouldn't continue cover. Another insurer on their panel obviously would, hence how the post office could offer cover still.
Not everyone in your position would end up in the same position, although they could. Depends who the insurer was.0
