    But they still stack up.
I beg to differ in a number of respects.

In particular the words in the language have been bastewardised for modern day use. What is evidence of prosperity in 2013 ? An accumulation of the latest gadgets and the ability tosquander £50,000 or £500,000 spent on a pink fluffy wedding ?

Who are the strong ? Those that ruthlessly fight to the top of the heap and fear no God in the ways they do it ?

Which wage payers deserve our respect ? All ? Which wage payers should be pulled down and exiled ? None ?

I perhaps agree on the notional inability to establish sound security on borrowed money, but then why have the banks been allowed to twist our entire economy so that it is now based upon the actual trading of debt as security and on nothing else worth mentioning?

What actual trouble befalls those who take and spend more than they earn from others who are thrifty and receive less than they deserve in their own efforts to prosper? No trouble at all apparently - no threat of jail - just the nuisance task of of negotiating with "regulators" on re-greasing the wheels of the economy with a little release of their ill-gotten gains back to central government - funded of course by the taxpayer.

What could and should men do for themselves permanently? Own a gun and use it perhaps on crooks who threaten their door or their bank accounts or their pension funds? Fetch their own water from the well lest an Australian or French owned company fail to deliver it ? I kid you not. Did you see the BBC report of the way water is delivered to houses in Delhi in a country where those that "prosper" have the same gadgets and toys as anywhere else in the world, and the same lack of scruples ? Should men permanently be responsible for selling their own debt as opposed to having their bank sell it for them down the river? Should men now permanently sell their own souls for any price they can get because bankers have messed up the entire economy ?

So, about that signature strapline of a died-in-the-wool comfortably off bank worker in these parts:
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift, strengthen the weak by weakening the strong, help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer, establish sound security on borrowed money, keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn, help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
Yes we can actually. All these things have been done for good or bad and all these things can be done.

There is danger in blindly following the mantras and cliches propounded by others, especially when others are long gone either permanently, or gone way ahead without a care for who might be following or stuck fast in the mess left in other's wakes.

Just my two-pennorth of course - I urge no-one to blindly follow the sentiments expressed, but I do urge the OP in this thread to help her mother complain to Nationwide :p

We have established that this is not a thread about a mis-sale, but is essentially about post-sale advice - as I said ealier 2 different things completely.

As I also said, if any comments were made by the clerk re the maintenance of the policy (when specifically asked by the LA as to it continuing suitability), and the nature and language used within the conversation, could and would be construed by a reasonable layperson to equte to advice, then it is my opinion that a recommendation was indeed given - even if the clerk didn't realise they were doing so at the time.

If general no client specific broad based comment was made, no thats not a recommendation or advice.

IMHO, I certainly think the OP requesting an explanation as to why Nwide recommended she maintain a DTA policy with no accompanying C&I in existance or actual review, is not the least bit unreasonable (nb - the fact the policy would have paid the applicable benefit, if she had died at any point proceeding this complaint, does not serve to validate any inappropriate or mis-leading advice regarding its continuance).

However, having said all of the above, this will all depend on what was actually said and in the absence of supporting documentary/oral evidence, what is reasonable to have been assumed was discussed and occured during the discussions between the adviser/clerk & Mum, surrounding this matter.

OP can I ask how much the total premiums paid from the date Mum repaid her mortgage to the last premium collected, and what was the term and commencing sum assured on the policy.

    Hope this helps
