The optical drive is the CD/DVD ROM
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

    Thanks guys,

I have removed the hard drive and given the mother board a pad down. I could see a couple of sticky marks courtesy of the ribena but not a huge amount so am not too confident but lets dry it out and see whether things change when i try to boot up next week.

In the meantime I'm struggling a bit to find out which caddy I need - afraid the descritpions on the amazon links do not mean too much to me!?

I have the hard drive in front of me - it's a Seagate momentus 250gb - does this give me the info I need to know which caddy to buy??

    Thx, rich

PM me your address and I'll post back the caddy you sent me.

For those who failed to read post #1, the OP states that the laptop is dead. So removing the HDD to put it in a caddy in order to retrieve the files is at the moment, the only option.

As for buying another identical model & dropping-in the HDD, yes, it would work fine. BUT Windows will detect new hardware and ask for a new key. This usually involves a quick free phonecall to Microsoft & off you go (I have done this myself). However, the strip-down and clean-up is the first (& cheapest) option to try.

If the laptop was powered-up when the spillage occurred, then you probably have a 25% chance of it ever working again.

  • Also, even when it's dried out you run the risk of a failure down the line due to corrosion. If you got it up and running again I'd backup even more frequently than is considered normal!
