Hot water tank making whistling noise?

Really hoping someone can help with this!
The water tank is in a cupboard in my bedroom. I woke this morning to a high pitched, kind of whistling sound. It then went away. Earlier I was downstairs in the living room and I could hear the whistling loudly again, through the kitchen (/my bedroom is above the kitchen). I turned the boiler off, and it's stopped.
Anyone know what this could be, and more importantly, is this gonna be really expensive to fix?
Thank you SO much in advance for any replies x

It could indicate that the water in the tank is far too hot, which is extremely dangerous. Is the tank much hotter than normal?
You need to get a competent plumber or RGI to look at it ASAP.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thank you, British gas are coming out in the morning, hopefully it's not too bad! The tank feels cold to the touch, so does this mean it's not too hot?0
