Claiming PPI from Car Finance

New here so sorry if its been asked before, but I had car finance back in 2005 and was missold PPI.
I've contacted the lender who told me I need to go through the Car Dealer I bought the car from as it was them who sold me the PPI.
Is this right?
Has anybody had any experience of going through the Car Dealer to claim back the PPI? The car dealer is The Car Shop in Cardiff which is still open btw
