Ethernet splitter?

Hi all

Our DVD player has gone kaput so I thought I'd upgrade. Anywho I've decided on Panasonic DMP BDT 120 blu ray player. This unit is Internet capable via LAN...

Now the thing is I have Sky Anytime rigged up using the wireless connector from Sky... Does anyone know if it's possible to use an Ethernet splitter on the output of the Sky connector to save me running cable around the room - I know cable is better than wireless but it is 12 feet away from the router in line of sight so not an issue at all, it just messy cabling around this bit of the room.

What you need is a Network Switch.

You connect it to your network via an Ethernet cable and it has a number of network ports on it for other devices.

Will that work? I'm not sure that you can use the Sky wireless adaptor as a general access point for multiple devices through a switch or router. But maybe you can - if so, I'm sure someone will confirm.

if you don't want wires, get a bluray player with wireless or use powerline adapters or move the router, telephone cable is thinner and easy to hide under carpets.

I'm not 100% either but I'm pretty certain you're right - you won't be able to run a cable from the skybox to the blu ray player.

I think what you need (I'm no expert), is a wireless access point with ethernet ports. You put the access point near the blu ray player and run an ethernet cable from this to the blu ray player.

The access point essentially works as an extenstion to your wireless network, but the fact it has ethernet ports on it as well solves the issue of having to run a cable across the room.

I don't think what Mr_Toad has suggested will work as you'll still need to get the cable to the other side of the room as that switch is not wireless.

As I've said, I'm not an expert, so hopefully someone will come along with the answer soon! :)

Possibly not, I read the original post as having access to at least one Ethernet port. Ethernet splitter in the title....

If the OP doesn't have an Ethernet port to connect the switch to then they could use a wireless to Ethernet adapter.

AFAIK Sky Wireless connector is just a bog standard wifi access point client.

OP needs ethernet patch cables, one from Sky and one from Bluray into a network switch (£7.18 inc. del) then a patch cable from the switch to the Sky wireless connector.

btw - I use this config with a TV, Sky box, BD player, AV Amp and PS3 all connected by patch cables to an 8 port switch which in turn is connected to a wifi access point client. Works fine for HD streaming and gaming with no adverse effect on ping.

For the wireless I use this. Currently £22.19 delivered which is 24 pence more than the Sky one but I don't know how the Sky performs. I previously tried wifi clients from TP-link, Linksys and USRobotics but they all had problems with ping instability and decay - the Edimax is fine. May be something to do with EMI due to the environment behind a TV stand with all the devices/cables.

    Hi again

Thanks for all of your responses. I'm sorry my post wasn't maybe as clear as it should have been. All I really needed to know was whether it is possible to turn one ethernet port into 2/many - much like plugging a 4 gang extension lead into an electrical outlet. I wasn't sure if it was possible to split this kind of signal but evidently it is!

And also whether the Sky Wireless Connector would accept other equipment or if it was sneakily locked somehow - it isn't!

    Cheers!

Yes you can. The switch takes care of everything. I use a Netgear WN604 in client mode to provide connectivity for my Sky box, TV and Xbox over wifi to my Sky wifi router.

If I am reading correctly, you are using a Netgear wifi access point client instead of a Sky Wireless Connector. I believe Fifer's question was whether multiple devices could connect to the latter.
