Can I stop Npower getting money for nothing

OK heres the problem.
I have moved into a new flat and Npower supply it with gas and electricity.
I dont want to stay with Npower I want to switch to a different provider. However I need to sign up to a tarriff with Npower before they can let my new provider take over the property.
It seems that every tarriff that Npower offer has a charge for switching of £30 pounds for both the gas and the electric.
This seems a little unfair to me does anyone know a way round this?
I have looked at the tarriffs they offer without the switching penalty but they seem to have surreptitiously put one in by including 2 unit prices, whereby the first so many units are charged at a higher rate, therefore if you switch you still effectively pay a penalty.
Can anybody help or am I just trapped into paying for the privilege of leaving Npower
Regards
Pete

Having a 2 tier pricing is another way of charging a standing charge, going forward 2 tier tariffs will disappear but all will have a standing charge. Just sign up to their standard tariff and start the switch straight away.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

as above, any suppliers standard tariff doesnt have that clause. besides your getting power so not something nothingDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

It sounds like sharp practice by a sales team member to me. There is no charge to set up an account in your name & address & you don't have to agree to any tie in tarrif with them.
If you are supplied on a deemed contract (ie you moved in used power, will pay for it when billed but are not tied into any deal with them) & they already have your name address etc - which is all that they need - there is no basis for them blocking a transfer to any supplier you choose0 -
