VW polo damp problem

Options
Hi all, I have a 2001 vw polo 5 door. It has a very annoying habit of steaming up very badly to the point you have to wait 5 mins for it to clear with heater.

I have checked windscreen, all fine. pollen filter is all fine checked as well. I have repaired the torn membrane in drivers door all others are ok.
checked drain holes under scuttle all fine.
The car has not got a sunroof.
Any one got any ideas what else to check? I as a windscreen fitter am reasonably ok with a set of spanners so let me know if you have any thoughts
cheers in advance

Is it losing water from the cooling system - just wondering if it might have a leak from the heater inside the car?

Otherwise have a very good look around the door seals. Water can get past them as they get older and it can be hard to spot where it's coming in.

You could try drying the car thoroughly - I had similar problems after a leaky sunroof. Once I'd sealed it I put a fan heater in (on the mains) with the windows just cracked open and left it for a couple of hours. Once all was warm and dry I didn't have any further problems

If it isn't leaking maybe all the moisture on the windows when cold is just being evaporated into the air in the car when it is warmed up and then just recondensing on the windows again when the car cools down. You should make sure you remove all moisture from the interior of the car.

Wipe the windows clear and remove the damp cloths from the car. Do what was suggested above with a fan heater or use a dehumidifier. If the condensation returns after this then look again for water ingress.

I occaisionally get bad condensation with my car. I find that wiping the windows free of water when it is cold and making sure all the damp cloths/paper towels are removed from the car solves it.

Are either of the front carpets wet?

The seal around a pollen filter can wear away over time. I had a passat which developed a leak because the seal had basically crumbled/cracked over time, rain water then got through it and ran down in to the car's passenger foot well which then made the car steam up. I resealed it and dried out the carpets, sorted.

There seems to be a rash of these at the moment.

Take a tip from the caravaners. A container of cat litter will absorb moisture. You can put it in some socks and tie the top off.

You can dry it out again in the oven / microwave.

leaking doors, check the carpets on both sides and the bottom of the door cards for mould! Its a common fault, water runs down the window, through the door and straight into the car, you need a diy guide. I have a puddle at the moment!

this is for the fabia but will be almost the same.

there are a lot of these threads about, it's the weather, wipe with a microfibre cloth, and turn the heating on full blast at the windscreen. if it's got aircon, make sure recirculate is off.

Laws of physics. When warm air meets a cold surface condensation will occur.

Only way to stop it in winter is to park your car in a heated sealed garage with an air dryer and don't breath when you're in it.

I can just see everyone with condensation issues driving around in a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA).:rotfl:

At least they can stay warm and wet!:D
