IMO if it was brake pads / discs it wouldn't explain why the noise is still there under braking ?????Bamboozled29 wrote: »Well the prognosis is in from Mini..... They say its definitely one of two things. Rear wheel bearing or my rear brake pads and discs are corroded and likely knocking. They said its nothing to do with the gears and never was. Only trouble is they won't put that in writing. They have put in writing what they recommend I have done and what is causing the noise which is pretty much what i expected them to do. I'm going to speak to the garage on Monday and see what they have to say althought I know it will be that the gear bearings were crumbling when they replaced them.
Wheel bearings would be likely as I've known them to be noisy even when no play in them has been detected and for the cost would have been my first option for replacement.
I take it as it's been mentioned about rear bearings we are not sure if the noise is coming from front or rear ?????
The reason they won't put it in writing is because at the moment there is no proof as to what it is, as it's all down to opinion. It's not just about the money0 -
how did you pay the £640?0

Thanks everyone for your responses. The noise is almost certainly coming from the rear offside. I paid £640 cash and I have a receipt. What really annoys me is the fact that when the car went back in for the second time because the same noise was still there, they said that it is perfectly safe and that if I was that sick of hearing the noise thy could replace my gear box for £1700. Thank god I didnt go ahead or I'd be suicidal now. I have spoken to the garage today and they are refusing point blank to give me any money back. They are saying my only option is to take the car back in and they will do what Mini have advised. I dont want to take it back to them as since my trouble I have found out a few other people who have had problems with the work this garage has done. I think I might go to Citizens Advice and see what they say my options are.0

I had the same thought when I read the post. The description of the noise sounds like the wheel bearing to me, having had one go on a previous car it had the same symptoms.
Or if not a bearing it could be something on the drive shaft like a warn CV.
I second your diagnosis sounds very much like a wheel bearing.0
