I have prepayment meters for gas & electric from British gas and I am repaying debts through them. As I am on benefits I also qualify for the warm home grant of £130. When I applied I was told that my debt would be taken off this, but I understand that this can't be done as its a government grant to help with energy costs.
Could someone clarify this for me? Many thanks

British Gas is correct.
Whether it comes off your debt or added to your electricity account as a credit it's still a credit of £130.
Aren't you happy with this?0 -
I don't really understand the query or answer you've been given?
If you owe £200 say
A grant of £130 is then credited to your account.
Meanwhile you use a further £100 of energy
You will now owe £170 ie ((£200 owed -£130 grant credit)+£100 further usage)
Your grant did reduce your debt / help towards consumption whichever way you look at it0 -
The OP presumably wanted it a a direct payment to their bank account to choose how they spend it.No free lunch, and no free laptop
