Hi MSE'ers - after some of your valuable opinions here!
Me, OH & 2 kids (3&8) currently live in a 3 bed terraced. We've been overpaying the mortgage for a while & currently have about £45k left outstanding. We've had itchy feet for a while now but just haven't been able to find somewhere else we like which has all the features we have at present & within the same location.
However, this evening i saw a house for sale just round the corner. It is a 4 bed semi & ticks every single box on our wish list and more.
Now the dilemma, do we stay where we are paying a comfortable mortgage which is rapidly going down each month or do we move, more than triple the mortgage which means cutting back on holidays etc & really watching the money but having a really lovely house at the end of it?
OH can't "discuss money this time of night" and has gone to bed but I really need to get some thoughts on this.
Any opinions very gladly received!

I think if you need more room, then consider the new house !
BUT you are in a good position with a lowish morgage it allows you to LIVE YOUR LIFE !
Many people move to keep up WITH THE JONES'S and some live a miserable existence
Good neighbours are an asset as well , I once stayed next to pair of C**** I now stay in a drive 33 houses and get 32 xmas cards ( must have upset other one, LOL)0 -
Is there no chance of putting an extension on where you are?
I personally wouldnt choose to live without holidays and the fun things in life for a house. I just wouldnt. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
It sounds like you're relatively young - I would be inclined to agree with Professional Landlord.
I am much less cautious than Lynz - but I think that is a personality difference!Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -
As long as you can afford it and wouldn't be struggling I would say go for it. The new house sounds like your dream home so your life will be happier and much improved anyway.
Who's to say you or your partner might be earning more money in the next 5 years and the luxuries in life can then return.
Property = Good investment
Good luck0 -
My DH and I wre in this same dilema. We currently live in a village and our house has 5 beds but just the one open plan living space.
We were looking at moving into the town. To a house with hopefully 5 or 6 beds and more reception rooms.
It would mean doubling our current motgage.
In the end we decided against it. The main reason being that we have plans.
we are both in our early 30's, have 4 children ranging from 8 to 13.
My husband is in a high paying job in IT.
The thing is we want to be mortgage free as close to 40 as possible, so that we can then travel. My DH would like to not have to be in the job he's doing now. He'd like to do something more vocational. Either teaching or song writting.
I found the idea of moving really easy. Thought, we'll have a lovely big house, we can afford the higher mortgage, cause we overpay quite alot on our mortgage now.
The thing is, we don't want to be slaves to our mortgage, we don't want to live to work and while a previous poster said your wages could go up, they could also go down.
Disscuss and write down what your plans for the future are. Look at what taking on a larger mortgage would do to those plans.
If having the house you want is one of your priorities, then thats great, but if not.....?0 -

Link? Lets all have a good nose0 -
But is it worth more than tripling your mortgage just to have one extra bedroom?
I think I'd seriously consider a loft extension if I really wanted extra space, though understand it may not be enough of a scratch for those itchy feet! The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Thanks for all the replies!
We don't have the option to extend or convert the loft as we are mid terrace. We were looking at a conservatory but because of the lie of the garden & something to do with the drainage (!) it would be quite expensive and probably not worth the money.
We are relatively young - 35  - and I am looking to start increasing my hours next year once my youngest starts at school so yes, we probably would be increasing our overall income fairly soon.
My future plans would most definitely include a move to a larger house although DH would prefer to stay where we are and have more disposable income. However, he also acknowledges that he doesn't want to be living here in 10 years time so is being a typical contradictory male!!
Thanks for all your thoughts as well - it really helps to hear other views on this!0 -
Choose life!
Really, I'd want to live in a house that was 'just right' for my income and one that would fit the whole family. Because I still want the experiences that make life worth living for me.
Like good food. Lots of it.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
