Reconsideration overturned :)

I applied for attendance allowance for my 70 yr mum who has COPD, fibrosis of lung and more recently diagnosed with lung cancer (early stage though so good prognosis for that). Her claim was turned down so I asked for a re-consideration and have just got off the phone to a lovely lady who has awarded her high rate and backdated to beginning of August.

My mother gets a state pension (think she gets the guaranteed pension credit ot whatever its called, she gets the warm home discount automatically), will the attendance allowance affect this? will her pension be reduced, stay the same or will she be entitled to any extra? I forgot to ask when I was on the line.

Also will she now be entitled to any other help such as help with getting a stairlift etc? (she owns her own house but no savings)

AA and DLA is almost entirely ignored as income by the whole system.
    It essentially never reduces income.
It may add premiums to certain benefits, and entitle you to others.

I don't think there is any additional premium on the pension/pension credit, but this isn't an area I'm knowledgable in.

no link to AA etc: if she needs a stairlift or other adaptions then it's possible she could get them through the local council: not sure exactly how it works but you probably need an OT assessment, they recommend what might help and then you wait.

Sue's right, contact your local social work department and they will tell you how to get an OT assessment. They may be able to help with other practical things too.

if she is not going from low rate to highter rate then she could be entitled to extra money from Pension Credit called Extra amount for severe disability

    Severe Disability Premium
Severe Disability Premium is awarded at the lower rate to single claimants or couples where: Attendance Allowance or Constant Attendance Allowance or the middle or higher rate DLA care component are received, and no one is entitled to Carer's Allowance (CA) for looking after them.

It is awarded at a higher rate to couples where:
    • both members receive AA or CAA or the middle or higher rate DLA care component, and
    • no one is entitled to Carer's Allowance (CA) for looking after either of them or their partner is registered blind.
If it low rate to high rate then nothing will change in the Pension Credit. The PC should get automatic notificaiton from the AA unit and should either call her to do the form over the phone or send a form called PC10 for completion.

Sorry I should have explained more in my previous post, sorry but had a migraine and answered quickly.

The most invaluable thing my daughter got from OT has been her little trolley, enables her to get her food from kitchen to table. Gave her grab sticks to enable her to pick up things she's dropped. The rubber jar and bottle openers. Would have arranged a walk in shower for her too, but dd's flat isn't going to be suitable much longer due to her going to be a wheelchair user. So there are many aids that the OT can help out with, don't resign yourself to thinking only about a stair lift.

Hope it all works out and she gets all the help she needs
