TV screen gone a funny colour ?

I have a 3 year old Sharp TV.
When I switched it on , yesterday, it has purple round the outside, a big green circle in the middle, and when you turn up the tv, the display shows up as red!
Does anyone know what is wrong with it?
It has another fault, that is just a bit annoying, it is a pain to connect the Xbox, as you have to keep pressing the AV button, to "catch" the right channel.
I don't want to get someone in, as I can buy new for less than £150, and we have an old Bush TV that is just as good and cost less than the Sharp, that we will bring down and use instead.
Thanks for any help!

I don't know, but I have children, so anything is possible!
  • Well I just my OH. Assuming its CRT i.e. not LCD or flat screen, it may need "de-gaussing".

Leave the tv off overnight. The following morning turn it on and off quickly at the set. Do this five times. Hopefully this will get the colours right again. Good luck :D

And move any magnets (esp. loudspeakers) away from the TV.

It sounds like a magnet has been near the screen - we had a rainbow stripe for a while after one of our kids tried to use a fishtank magnetic cleaner to 'dust' the screen ! It does fade eventually - didnt realise you could reset by turning it on & off 5 times - will remember that tip TA
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know

I don't know how this works, but a TV repair man showed me this a few years ago.

If you get a soldering gun and hold it sideways on to the screen, just close enough to make the picture wobble, and move it around it can make the colours return to normal and it also fixes other picture problems.

Don't get it too near to the screen though, or it might make matters worse.

Personally I would not do that as it could cause more problems than it solves.

Modern TVs should degauss aitomatically everytime they are switched on.
  • I had a similar problem with my tv it turned out to be due to having my Hi Fi Speakers and cordless dect phone too near the set. Could be a poss' solution to move them if you have any too near the TV?

    Thanks for all the replies.
I have swapped the TV over, so the Sharp one can have a rest for a couple of days, then I will try the soldering iron trick.
Turning it on and off did nothing, I'm afraid:cry:
If I have any luck getting it fixed, I will report back.
