I'm looking for recommendadtions for PC/Laptop diagnostic software to help a friend start a small PC/Laptop repair/upgrade business that will hopefully suppliment his Disability benefits.

He's not used to being out of work having worked since he was 14 through to recently (he's 54) and he isn't coping well with being unable to work (He was involved in a very serious car accident and lost a leg and sufferred severe back and stomach injuries due to being crushed) so needs something to keep him occupied. He knows quite a bit about PC's and I think this could be a good project to keep him occupied.

Any advice appreciated.

apart from ram/disk testers, there isn't any of any use. disk testers are available from most hd manufacturers websites, and ram testers are a little pointless.

  • This used to be my preferred choice

    http://www.eurosoft-uk.com/pccheck.html

Bootable CD, full system check or individual component/ chipset checks, printouts available.

Very useful for unstable systems, if you can see a lot of time consuming work ahead, and are unsure of hardware faults, it can nail them down.

Also, it can be used as a 'proof of system ok' tool for customers if you end up saying a Windows reinstall will fix the problem - reinstalls are awful for non PC literate customers as they need everything just as it was, best avoided if possible.

Memtest and one or two of the hard drive manufacturers bootable hard drive diagnostics useful for quick onsite checks, also......Windows password removal CD useful once in a while.

    Best of luck :)
  • EVEREST Ultimate Edition is a complete PC diagnostics software utility that assists you while installing, optimizing or troubleshooting your computer by providing all the information you can think of about your system – from hardware devices and installed drivers to operating system security and stability metrics.
    martin your are the best
  • The web says Everest is now discontinued??

It's a good four years since I've used Everest, isn't it install, or run from USB stick within Windows, ok with a stable system, but not so good with an unstable system.
  • To remove all forms of virus' and malware that may clog up your PC, I've been using hitmanpro (google hitmanpro, cant post links atm).
Its a free 30 day trial, a one time run is generally all you need.
