Eon Meter Trap ??

I recently received a letter from Eon telling me they were increasing my direct debit from £202pm to £307pm. I just called them and right away without any hassle they said "would you like to go back on your old amount of £202, i said yes and they did!
The reason for the hike was they said, because although i was paying monthly dd i had an out standing balance of £182.
I also asked them to check i was on the lowest tariff which they did, and said that i was. In the meantime i was on uswitch, which showed there were 20 switches i could make ranging from saving £470 a year to £2 a year, 6 of which were with Eon!!!
They went on to tell me that if i switched the company I tried to switch to would want my meter details and that they would put there prices up once they knew what type of meter i had!!
I had a new meter installed 2 days ago. So there you have it if Eon are offering to fit a new meter on "Safety" grounds they are then changing it for a meter that ties you into there product, or are they?? answers on a postcard!! (or email)

    Welcome to the forum.
It might help if you told us a) which Eon tariff you are currently on, and b) what sort of meter they have fitted?
If you are referrng to a smart meter, then it will not affect your tariff with another supplier-it will simply be read as a conventional meter (smart meters vary between suppliers and are not universal).
If you switch supplier, you will have to clear your debt-and if it's over £200, then Eon may block the transfer.

What sort of meter do you have?
As long as you have a meter that allows you to switch supplier (the majority of consumers do), then why would a new supplier increase their prices?
I suggest you contact the new supplier of your choice directly, it you want to be doubly sure :)

(If you have a dual rate E7 meter and are currently supplied on a single rate tariff, then I suggest you contact the new supplier directly too if you wish to remain on a single rate tariff as some suppliers may not allow this, but they should arrange a change of meter if appropriate ... for which a charge may apply)

Welcome to the forums Jim

I promise you we haven’t changed your meter to trap you. As the others have said. It’s highly unlikely that another supplier wouldn’t support the meter you have.

What sort of meter is it? Did you get a letter to say it needed to be changed for safety reasons?

Did you pay your balance in full this morning so that we could lower your payments?

What information did you give USwitch when doing a comparison that contradicted what we told you on the phone?

I’m sorry for all these questions, I’m just a little concerned that you’ve already spoken to us about these things and may not have been given the right advice.

Hoping I can help clear things up :)

As Eon rep says, metering is a separate issue. Meter asset managers own and maintain meters and gas suppliers effectively rent meters from MAMs for the purpose of conveyance and measurement of gas consumed. The meter change has no bearing on your increase though bear in mind that when the meter was changed, the old meter reading will have flowed through to Eon which may then have flagged that you are currently in debt to them, thus prompting them to inch up your DD to stave off further debt which is no bad thing. It wont go away and has to be managed.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
