Tried it and it works - takes a long time to download a full hours program though
What is the data rate for HD recording ?

The data rate is irrelavent as you are not streaming the programme.
The amount of data for an HD programme is roughly four times more than for a SD programme, so will take four times longer than it takes you to download an SD programme.
Last nights Stargazing Live on BBC HD is a 2.66gB download ( 59 min programme)

If you have a 10Mb internet connection then it will take (2.66 *1000* 8 )/10 = 2128 seconds or 35 minutes to download.
    Someone check the maths!!

1024 bytes to a kilobyte. So 1GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. So ignoring parity bits etc. there are 8 bits to a byte.

    2.66 x 1,073,741,824 x 8 = 22,849,226,015 bits

10meg internet throughput = 10,485,760 bits per second

    22,849,226,015 / 10,485,760 = 2,179 seconds, or 36 minutes 19 seconds. :) (Theoretically). ;)

21Twinkle, make sure you aren't going to breach any monthly download limit if you are using catch-up with a lot of HD programming.

Nonsense, you can watch the shows as soon as they become "available" which is typically after they have downloaded 1% of the film or programme.

I think I was a bit unclear, I meant you can't start watching the program, then pull out your connection straight away - as it won't be fully downloaded at that point.

Thanks - I am on unlimited downloads
I was just wondering how long a 1 hr programme would take to download - I only connect at 3Mbps !!!

No point in downloading HD content for a 24" TV, unless you sit on top of the screen

Equally, not much point in subscribing to Sky HD.
