Cheapest way to get return train ticket to London

Myself and another adult will travel from Cumbria to London by train midweek in June (going there one day, coming back the next). Please could you tell me the best way to get a good deal on this?

try https://www.trainline.co.uk.

I've found that 2 singles can be cheaper than a return journey.

Book in advance (ie NOW) on the Virgin Trains website. Click on the link to advance single fares and look for value tickets.
