Whole Life Insurance Policy after death

Can anyone help....my family has found an old penny policy which was taken out by my grandfather in 1939. Sadly he died in 1982. At the time he died we didn't know about this policy so never acted upon it. Does anyone know if it is too late to do anything about it. It is a Whole Life (Third Party) Policy which he paid 1p every week. We have contacted the insurer and they have said that it is so old they don't have a record of it on computer and that we should send it to them for them to have a look at. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. many thanks
