Loss of a function in a newly-bought car?
Hello,
I have recently bought a 2007 Peugeot 308 from a local independent garage group in Ayrshire, having seen the car on their website.
The description of the car on the website stated that the car has automatic lights as a feature, and I noticed this feature on my initial viewing of the car, indicated by an "A" on the left steering wheel barrel control for the lights. Upon agreeing to buy the car, I requested that the steering wheel (in poor condition) be changed and this was accepted.
However, having picked up the car, it appears that as well as the steering wheel, the function barrels on either side of the wheel have also been changed, resulting in a barrel that no longer has an "A" for the automatic light function, meaning I have now lost the function. I contacted the garage to ask that they remedy this but they have denied that the car has the automatic lights function and therefore, refused to change the wheel.
Surely, if it is stated in the advert (and also listed as a feature on various car websites such as Parkers and WhatCar for this model) then they must change the wheel so that I have that function again?

Is the advert still on the website? If not do you have a photo of the advert stating the feature?0

What model is the car, I mean spec (s, LX, exclusive, sport, bla bla bla)
I thought the Peugeot's like the my Citroen had a little button at the end of the left had stalk which switched the Auto lights on and off. My car has auto lights and has not got the "A" on the stalk just side & dipped beam setting. I have a sensor at the top of the screen for the auto lights have you got this???
read the manual!!!!!!Google gives you answers use it.........0 -
Doesnt matter on the spec, Some cars can come without them for one reason or another. Customer wanted them removed.
So saying its an ?? so should have them isnt foolproof.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Just how bad a condition was the steering wheel in that made you request a new one was fitted? Have you tried contacting Peugeot and gving therm the car's VIN number to confirm whether or not it would have had auto lights fitted at the factory?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Having had auto lights, I don't regard them as a feature worth worrying about, especially on a 5-year old car. After the first month, I never used mine again.0

I have them but, although I do leave my lights on automatic all the time, if they weren't there I wouldn't find using my brain and switching them on manually as appropriate too much of a burden. I seem to manage in my other car.;)0 -

I agree, had them on the 206 and whilst it's all fine early morning/evening I found it a right PITA on really overcast days as obviously the sensor goes by light levels so lots of low big black clouds and the lights would go on, then lighter clouds a few minutes later and the lights would go off... Rinse and repeat. I don't think I lasted a month with auto lights :rotfl:
Having said that though, if the OP was sold a car described as having auto-lights then surely the function should be there, regardless of whether the new owner wants to use it or not.
The suggestion of checking with Peugeot directly with the VIN number is probably the best thing to do and then depending on the answer, taking it up with the dealer the car was bought from if it's meant to have them. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

Only the ad didn't say replace steering wheel.
To some extent its not clear cut....
Lets say you had cloth electric seats and you asked for leather sports seats to be fitted as part of the deal to buy.... if you didn't specifically say 'and they need to be electric as well' then if they stuck in manual leather sports seats it's not clear!
The ad might have been wrong in the 1st place.... and its not a major feature on a 5yr old PUG? Often the drivel they post is cut/paste from the manufacturers spec sheet.
HOWEVER: What is really comes down to is if the garage want to spend more time/money rectifying this....
I don't know how much work to change the stalks, if it even has the electronics and (being a PUG do you want any extra - waiting to go wrong additional electronics)
Personally I use the auto function on my BMW but it's obviously 'smarter' than just instantaneous light levels as it doesn't 'rinse and repeat'.... having said that I wouldn't spend an extra penny to have the feature! I only use it because it's there!0 -

However the steering wheel has nothing to do with the function AND you would expect the wheel to be replaced like for like, and if it means replacing the storks and steering column functionality you would expect like for like to be replaced.
I had a 307 and the auto headlight setting was in the computer controlled off the stereo, and my old man (Peugeot Mechanic) was telling me how a job he had recently on a 308 was to change the daytime running lights (as they didnt come on) and when he looked into it, it was because the computer system had them switched off, and the customer just needed to go into this to change the setting...0 -
If he paid for it yes.... however if it was an informal.. i'll by it if you change the wheel... then it's a bit muddier....However the steering wheel has nothing to do with the function AND you would expect the wheel to be replaced like for like, and if it means replacing the storks and steering column functionality you would expect like for like to be replaced.
The point is if they replaced the whole column they are really going to dig their heels in over this if they have to then source and purchase another and end-up with a useless one until they find somewhere to put it?
And in the end... it's not like its a 'must have'.... or even certain it was in the car before the change of wheel and not just copy/paste in the advert..... if this was the case the OP could have said..I'll buy it IF you change the wheel and add automatic lights!I had a 307 and the auto headlight setting was in the computer controlled off the stereo, and my old man (Peugeot Mechanic) was telling me how a job he had recently on a 308 was to change the daytime running lights (as they didnt come on) and when he looked into it, it was because the computer system had them switched off, and the customer just needed to go into this to change the setting...
Yeah... my BMW has a lot set in the comp... my GF then complains it does x,y,z (exactly as I programmed it to do) and then blames the car???? I had to reprogram the door unlock when switching off specifically because on the 1:20 time she is a passenger she can't wait to grab the handle BEFORE I stop the car!!!!0
