I'm a bit of a gym addict, and like I say to anyone in your position, I have better things to do than look at you when I'm working out

Everyone is at a gym for the same reason, to improve their fitness, get your !!!! in there and get going

Exactly - I concentrate on what I'm doing and couldn't care less about what other people look like. I'm always a bit miffed though when I'm asked by some people why I go to the gym since I don't need to lose weight... Erm, that would be because I actually enjoy it, it's not some kind of chore!

OP: Go to the gym if that's what you want to do :T it will get easier the more often you go ;) and why should you care if some idiots think they have the right to judge you. Look after yourself and ignore them. Obviously you also need to pay some attention to what you're eating since you're after weight loss and remember that it will take time to achieve, there's no magic wand

I'm a fattie who goes to the gym :D

Admitadly i've not seen anyone else as big as me there, though some people are a bit overweight. But to be honest i don't think anyone cares. Most people are so focused on their workouts they don't relly notice peopel around them. I know i don't give a fig. Well...i might look at someone and think "keep working out/run a bit longer/do more and you could look as good as they do" but generally i don't care.

    Go for it :)

Meh, I couldn't care how I look at the gym - I'm larger than I should be but hell, that's the point in BEING there surely? Try your local authority leisure centre, less likely to be full of posers - I go 10-11am (OK not good for everyone I know) and it's all older people who honestly don't care. No posers, you do get the odd fit freak in there who's never seen a cream cake, but even they're not fussed with the out of shape types!

As for sweating, that's the whole point, you don't lose weight by magic, you exercise & you sweat - don't worry about that!

I would go and visit your GP. A lot of PCT's are now offering free acess to health club facilities (often time restrictions apply), following a GP referal. That might mean that you are able to do WW and go to the gym!

  • Hi - just a few thoughts which may help you. I'm in a similar position, except that whilst I thought WW was good, I also thought it was expensive and I didn't like the way they were pushing their own products which are not always good.

You already have the books and the know how - so do you need to go to WW? Is it for motivation? If so, how about having a buddy to do this with - there are so many of us who are trying to lose weight and I'm sure you must know someone in a similar position who would enjoy having a diet and possibly even an exercise buddy. Think how much money you could save by NOT going to WW.

Exercise - which we all need, is always an issue on cold dark winter nights. Free exercise generally means biking or walking - which is nice in decent weather but not always what we fancy doing in the winter. If you like the gym (I hate going to gyms), and can find a reasonably priced one, then go for it. The people there won't even notice what you look like - and who cares anyway - they are there because they have a hang up about their body shapes too!

If you don't like going to a gym, and it can be expensive, how about a skipping rope, just outside your back door. You only have to start with skipping for a minute and gradually build up. It is a really quick way to build fitness. I actually started with 3 x 20 second sessions with a break in between to get my breath back. The other thing I do, which is really successful is to use my lunch break to go for a quick walk. I can do a circuit in the town of about a mile in about 20 minutes, and it all helps.

Whatever you decide - do what YOU want. I've decided to diet and exercise with a buddy and so far it's working well. I'm a size 20 too, and need to get down to a 14-16.

    Good luck

Hi there, thought I'd pitch and give you what I think to be an honest answer.

Yes, fat people go to the gym. And no-one looks down on them. I think there is a general appreciation that you might not be fit but that you are the one doing something about it.

Think about it; no-one at the gym thinks they are perfect, otherwise they wouldn't be there.

But... You will get noticed. I'm a bit more realistic about this because people will look at noticeable things. But I PROMISE you this will be for about 0.0001s seconds, and really quite benign. Then people would go on to look at the girl in short shorts, or the guy they are tryin to beat on the rowing machine. You know, things that actually hold the attention. Part of feeling self-conscious is thinking you would be the centre of attention. You won't, unless you are doing something stupid like running backwards on a treadmill.

So feel relaxed about it; most people, if they even bother to think about it, have a 'good on you' attitude
  • I don't think about the large people who go to the gym and where i am there's people of all shapes and sizes

If anything i stare more at the tiny, skinny girl who looks like she needs a good feed rather than running for an hour on a treadmill.

Again i have respect for anyone who is chubby and wants to do something about it.

You say you never leave your house apart from for work, if you want to start slowly, you could consider walks at weekends to get you into things and after work once the days get lighter. Losing weight is about changing your diet too so if you are eating 'naughty things' try and cut down on them at the same time and you'll feel so much better for it!

Thing is, even if you people look, you don't know what they're thinking - its in your head that it would become negative.

Go for it and make it your mission to encourage and be welcoming to any larger people (or anyone who looks a little out of their comfort zone) you see there.

    Good luck.

My ex was a complete plank - and a gym instructor briefly (he only did anything briefly :) )

Anyway, he'd have loved to get his hands on you - so would any of the staff there. They are all fairly learned actually, and the skinny minnies who go there to show off their latest gear bore them to bits.

he would rave about someone coming in who actually wanted help, and needed his expertise.

Not only will no one be bothered about you because they are all so self obssessed they won't notice, but the instructors will be fighting over you!

You do not have to go to a gym to excercise.

I would suggest you walk more take the stairs. Swimming is very good, particularly for those who are overweight. Many find motivation difficult to excercise alone. Check out any local clubs, e.g. there is a FREE walking club and a swim fit class in my home town.
