Keratin hair treatment by hairdressers - advice

Hi,
My hairdresser keeps trying to persuade me to buy a special keratin hair treatment. It's really expensive - around £150 to £200 and is supposed to be a super moisturising, smoothing treatment which does away with dry, frizzy hair and cuts drying times. It claims to make hair shiny and manageable and hydrated and its effects last for 3-5 months.
I could never really either afford or justify spending this amount of money on a hair treatment, but wondering whether anyone knows of a source for buying a similar treatment which you can apply yourself at home? Also whether there is any truth all the hype about this product?
Many thx in advance

Hey
I have heard great things about keratin treatments, but to be perfectly honest, it didn't work for me.
I have very thick, very curly hair. I was told by my hairdresser it would be sleek and manageable after the treatment, and it would last for six months. It was stunning during the two days I had to keep it on (my hair was blow dried with it on), but as soon as it was washed it went back to normal.
Having said that, I have since changed hairdressers, and now I get matrix opti-smooth treatment and it is incredible. My hair is sleek, smooth, straight, and looks good. It also feels great too, and it doesn't seem to damage my hair. I have my roots redone every six months now and I couldn't live without it. I really recommend it to anyone who wants straight, hassle free hair.Sealed Pot Challenge 2013 #1947 (open the pot on 28th November 2013!)

OP you can do it yourself at home but make sure you have a window open as the smell is very strong.
I get my kits from here http://www.keratinkits.com/topup-kit.php#.UOy_lHfVUv8 just get the top up kit it only cost £24.99 you can get the complete kit for £27.99 but you only get a comb and 2 hair clips extra and I'm sure you have them at home so don't waste your money.
Also click on the video link on the site as it gives full instructions on how to use it and what shampoos not to use. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
Hi OP.
I have tried keratin treatments twice now and to be honest, they didn't really work on my hair. The first was done by a hairdresser who specialised in them and like the previous poster, my hair was fabulous for a few days, but as soon as I washed it, the effects were largely gone. The second time I did it at home with a professional product exactly as directed and again, it wasn't much cop.
I have heard some people swear by it (Kate Garraway on Daybreak was waxing lyrical about it a few weeks ago). The Matrix product the other poster mentioned sound interesting. I would give one of the treatments a go to see if it works for you. I think alot of the success depends on how porous your hair is-mine is very porous so I don't think it holds the keratin well.
In the meantime, I will keep searching for the hair holy grail....oh for smooth, shiny hair!0 -

hiya,
can i ask, do you really notice a difference? how long does it last for you?
my hair is really frizzy its looks awful when it isnt strightened,
i always use ghd`s, i wouldnt leave the house with it been so
frizzy,
looks like a good kit in your link, i might have to try it0 -
I get it done twice a year and have done for a number of years now. It is the answer to my hair problems and takes me from having really coarse, frizzy candyfloss hair to hair like normal people.
The keratin slowly comes out your hair but does build up to some extent so I do find that I now only need it twice a year rather than every 3-4 months. I only pay £125 twice a year and get it after I get my highlights done which is fab.
I couldn't live without it or if that sounds a bit melodramatic I would have to have very short hair again. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

Hi, yes it made a big difference and it cut down my hair drying time 45 minutes.
As I used the correct shampoo and conditioner my hair was bone straight for 5 - 6 months before I felt like I needed a top up.
Remember it's the heat of the irons that makes your hair bone straight so if you apply then seal at the correct temperature it should lastIt's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
I had this done a couple of years ago and unfortunately it didn't work for me either. The salon tried to remedy the situation by re-doing it but that only lasted a week or two.
I paid £250 (I have pretty long hair) and no way would I recommend the treatment to anyone else. It may work for you, but at that price, it isn't a gamble I'd be willing to take!0 -
worked for me too, utterly brilliant but I think its bestfor hair that isnt TOO curly, someone at work had it done and it wasnt much good
I would look out for a GROUPON offer as you would get it done for about £60 max
You do have to use the correct shampoo and conditioner afterwards.
Mine lasts about 6 months and have always gone for Groupon offers. Every time it worked just the same even though different manufacturers products used.
Please could Gardinia82 saya bit more about the Matrix treatment Opti Smooth treatment please. How does it differ from Keratin and what do you pay for it? Thanks0 -
Another yes vote here. I first tried via a Groupon offer, and have been hooked ever since. No longer need to use anti frizz treatments, hair serum, straighteners etc.
Lasts 3 to 4 months for me, using appropriate shampoo and conditioner. You shouldn't need to pay more than £50 to £60 as there are always Groupon/KGB type offers.
For my last treatment, I took the plunge and risked a home self treatment which was recommened:

My husband did it, it's pretty easy and has worked out well. So far I'm about 6 weeks in and hair is still good. I have long hair and will get 2 treatments out of that product.
I would however recommend getting Groupon type deal first, to see how it is done.
Couldn't live without it now!0 -
thank you everyone, very helpful,
can i ask what kind of shampoo you use?
