Insurance claims information

Is there a way of to obtain a copy of previous claims made on your home insurance? After a recent claim on my property the insurance some dates and info on a previous claim did not tally up, all was clarified eventually but just wondered if this kind of information would be available, and if so from where?

You will need to contact Insurance Databases who hold most of this data centrally.

but note not all insurers contribute to CUE
  • A call to the insurer's claims department might be easier.

It really depends what you want to know or get as the above doesnt make much sense.

CUE is the database used to exchange information between insurers but not all insurers contribute to it and there is a limited level of information stored.

If you wanted a more indepth amount of information you would need to contact the insurer involved and potentially do a SARs request to get all of the information however CUE may be a better place if your issue is what your new insurers have picked up from CUE about your history.

Ideally what i want to find out is, claims i have made to date (including costs & dates) which would invalidate a future claim if i provided the wrong/inaccurate info, possibly save any future hassle

You can ask CUE but if for example you've been insured with XYZ Insurance and they don't report claims to CUE and your current insurers decide to do a thorough job they could contact XYZ Insurance and find out.

The only real way you can be 100% sure is to contact each insurer.

Being realistic though, we are talking of only 3-5 years history, is your memory really that bad that you cannot remember if a significant event has happened or not?

When you are taking out insurance you are responsible for giving the insurer the correct information regarding previous claims.

Most companies will want to know details for claims within 3 years - date, cost, type of claim, etc. Some will ask about previous years to increase the ncd for more claim free years but may not need to know that actual details.

Anything beyond 3 -5 years you do not need to worry about unless perhaps it was a flood or subsidence claim.

It can be hard to remember the exact date and value of a claim if it was not a large value but it is advisable to find out.

CUE may used by insurers to check previous claims history in the event of a claim but not normally when you are taking a policy out unless there is some reason to do so - eg previous insurance declined, etc.
