Any advice on a PAYG Indian SIM to buy in India?

My father's travelling to India on Thurs and plans to buy a SIM, for his iPhone 4s, when there, but I'm concerned he might buy the wrong one.
Are there any networks to avoid or things to be wary of? Do any Indian networks have deals with Western carriers, which might give us both a bit more confidence in their reliability?
Cheers.

Make sure he takes his passport, a copy or three of his passport a copy or three of his visa, some passport and visa size photographs, proof of where he is staying and their phone number so that the mobile network can contact the hotel to confirm this.
Apart from that it's usually not too much of a bind - for India.
If and when you get a sim the bigger networks are usually fine and very cheap.0 -

Ive got a Vodafone India and everytime you move states it charges roaming which to be honest aren't much different than just using a UK mobile with a roaming plan.
If you are staying in one state then its worthwhile, otherwise I dont think it is.0 -
Yes forget to say the bit about 'national roaming', but check any non-indian
network charges carefully. India is one of the more expensive places to use any foreign sim.
This might help a bit (or not)

Thanks.
I'll give Vodafone a call to ensure the iPhone isn't blocked and what they have to say about Indian travel:

Otherwise, he'll use one of the phone shops in Delhi and Utter Pradesh to call or text.0 -
Calls back to the UK with a Vodafone (Indian) sim are about 7p per min.
Calls back to the UK with a Vodafone ( UK ) sim are about £1.65 per min.
